May 2006

The season of Easter continues through May, with the seventh and last Sunday of the season being the Sunday after Ascension Day. Before Jesus returned to heaven, he gave his disciples certain instructions - the mission statement of the church, as it were. St Matthew records the instruction "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV) St Luke, writing in Acts 1:8, tells the disciples, "you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (NIV)

So it is quite clear that Christians are called to "go preach, go teach, go baptise", and to do this in their immediate neighbourhood, throughout their own land and then throughout the world. That is, missionary work is an imperative.

During our week of mission (6 to 14 May 2006) the church in Glencairn made a special move to obey these commands of Jesus. "Mission '06 - Open Doors" was in full swing. Members of the church invited others to attend the mission week events to hear and be challenged by the Gospel.  Details of the week's events may be found on this page. Please pray that the people of Glencairn will continue to be blessed  by the Holy Spirit.
