In many churches in the northern hemisphere, October is the month when Harvest Thanksgiving services are held. The old Collect goes "O Almighty God and heavenly Father, we glorify thee that thou hast fulfilled to us thy gracious promise, that, while the earth remaineth, seed time and harvest shall not fail." Yes, we give thanks for our food, that comes from all over the world courtesy of Tesco, Sainsburys and the rest. Sadly there are countries in the world where "seedtime and harvest" have failed this year, last year, the year before. The new Collect reminds us that, while we give thanks for our food, "the fruits of the earth", we should "use them to the glory of God, and for the relief of those in need." Ken |
